Stephanie and Nirali matched in April of 2023. For weekly classes, Stephanie and Nirali meet over Zoom to solve tricky math problems, as well as learn new Spanish vocabulary. Nirali is part of the FCSN SEP (supported employment) program and attends the East Bay Center multiple times a week. From geometry and multiplication to simple statistics, Nirali enjoys discovering and immersing herself in new math topics. She enjoys learning about different Spanish words, foods, and elements of culture. SNTutoring is a beneficial program that helps Nirali stay busy and learn about topics that interest her. Outside of SNTutoring and FCSN, Nirali plays tennis and enjoys art. A recent conversation between Stephanie and Nirali is transcribed below.
S: How did you hear about FCSN, and what do you do at the program?
N: What do I do in FCSN? Well, the first thing I did was join the SEP program and that was fun. I was recommended to join this program because it has tailored programs for special needs kids, and it has all types of activities, such as holiday activities every month. What’s the next question?
S: How did you hear about SNTutoring?
N: How did I hear about SNTutoring?
S: Did someone recommend you to join?
N: When my mom signed me up for tutoring, I thought it was going to be hard, but for me, it’s easy because I’m learning math, and, of course, Spanish. My mom recommended it to me because it’s good for me to stay busy.
S: So, it was your mom’s idea to get you started on tutoring?
N: Yes.
S: Besides doing math, what are some other topics that interest you?
N: I really like math, including statistics and challenging problems. I love to challenge myself and try my best in it.
S: And, do you enjoy your classes? Do you think you’re learning a lot of new stuff?
N: Yes.
S: We also do Spanish, so what do you like learning about that?
N: What I like in Spanish is that when we do the newer topics, we put in new titles on our slide deck, and that is very interesting. I like that we have a lot of new ideas. So, in total, we have sixty-six slides so far. So, yeah, I’m liking it, and in my google docs, I have a whole page of definitions. So, yeah, it’s fun.
S: How have our classes impacted you? Has it helped you with your schoolwork?
N: Something that has impacted me from school?
S: Yeah, do you think our tutoring sessions help with your schoolwork?
N: Sometimes, but it’s different from my schoolwork at Ohlone. They are different assignments. Ohlone does not offer statistics.
S: Okay. If there is one topic you would choose to learn about, what would it be? Something that we don’t do.
N: I like statistics and learning about bar graphs. I think I did that before in elementary school. Yeah, I have a little memory about doing that.
S: Outside of tutoring and doing math, what else do you like to do?
N: Everything actually.
S: Do you like to play sports? Do you like to do art? Do you like to go out? Can you tell me a little more?
N: Okay, I’m taking art class through Ohlone. So, I did a few drawings in my sketchbook. I’m getting better at drawing actually with the help of a ruler. Sometimes I go out: twice a week, I go to FCSN, I do my college assignments because I get focused on it. When I focus on it, I don’t get distracted by my phone. Even though it’s next to me, I don’t use it.
S: Okay, that’s all the questions. Thank you.
